...¨Duende is famously said to be something you can't teach, can't fake, and can't guarantee — Federico García Lorca himself described it as a kind of struggle rather than a skill. Amalia designed an entire evening to inspire us to feel the duende, unexpectedly, in the moment. Mid-story, she'd suddenly sing a line of flamenco, or clap out a rhythm in pure delight, as if the history she was telling us needed greater expression. Along the way she introduced us to characters with their own kind of magic, and taught us the steps of flamenco herself with a level of energy and passion that made it impossible not to engage with full heart and spirit. All of this built toward the performance at the tablao — I won't describe what happened there, except to say that everything we'd absorbed over the evening made sense. Amalia is warm, formidable, incredibly talented, and completely devoted to making sure you experience flamenco properly — and we had the satisfaction of discussing the performance later with her, through the eye and expertise of a maestro herself¨

...¨At EUR550 a person, you might ask what you're paying for, and the answer is that it is worth every euro and more. It's not the price of a flamenco show — you can see one for less — though this one is not easy to get into. It's the price of everything Amalia builds around it in the quest for duende: her own charismatic presence, the story of flamenco experienced through feelings and theater, a guitar-maker's workshop where we could really talk with the master and his team, a flamenco academy where we unexpectedly met the teacher who trained Amalia herself, and delightful life lessons like how to speak using a fan. Every part of the experience builds up to duende, the mythical quality flamenco performers chase, and you realize it must be earned by understanding everything around it: the instruments, the history, the neighborhoods, the craft, the passion. By the time we sat down for the performance — which was world-class, with some of the best seats in the house — we understood a little bit of what duende means. An unforgettable experience, and one I'd recommend without hesitation. One tip: wear good walking shoes, dress sharp, and be prepared to be blown away¨

...¨Street theatre, a flamenco class, an amazing dinner and performance in a legendary venue - this experience has it all! Amalia immersed us in the world of flamenco, which a focus on the mysterious 'duende', a state of grace which can sometimes be experienced by performers and audience alike. She took us through the living heritage of the musical genre in the streets of the city's Lavapies. This including a session at the world's oldest flamenco school, where we got a taste of dance steps, flamenco clapping, and the different 'palos' which constitute the music. These elements gave us both a cultural, historical, and personal relationship with the music, which was the perfect primer for the show we witnessed at a corral in La Latina, featuring two dancers and a guitarist, all of whom were world-class, and which was accompanied by an excellent meal. Amalia herself is incredibly warm and friendly. As someone with flamenco performance experience herself, she is the perfect host, and guided us through the past and present of flamenco culture¨
